We are sorry that the Secret Garden is out of use this summer. The clearing away of the thicket around the flint wall earlier, revealed it to be in very poor condition. We decided to rebuild the wall completely and have now arranged for that to happen. Work will restart in September when the wall will be taken down, the soil behind it removed and a new foundation strip laid. There will be a further delay before the wall is rebuilt next Spring. This is because the flints are to be laid in lime mortar which cannot be used in low winter temperatures.
For the safety of garden users, the area will be cordoned off so that heavy machinery can be used to demolish the wall, take away spoil and import bulk materials for the project.
Thereafter, the gardens team will replant the garden and relay the lawn ready for residents to enjoy again next summer. After a complete growing season in 2022, the garden should be looking very good for the celebrations in 2023 of two hundred years of Kemp Town Enclosures.
